Liverpool, ENGLAND 19th<\/sup>\u00a0<\/b>AUGUST:<\/b>\u00a0The world\u2019s top drift racers descended upon the city of Liverpool today to witness Gaz Whiter being crowned champion of Red Bull Drift Shifters; one of the biggest, loudest and most precise motorsport events to ever hit the UK.<\/div>\n

The competition saw twelve global drift legends showcase their skills just feet from excited spectators in the shadow of the iconic Royal Liver building.<\/div>\n

After a day of heated competition and high octane moves, it was Gaz Whiter from New Zealand, driving a\u00a0Nissan Silvia V8<\/u>, who\u00a0topped the podium on Liverpool\u2019s iconic dockside – beating rivals Forrest Wang and Fredric Aasb\u00f8 who came in second and third respectively.<\/div>\n

When asked how it felt to win, with his last lap reaching the highest score of the day, Gaz said: \u201cIt\u2019s been amazing! The electricity from the fans here in Liverpool was incredible and it\u2019s been a blast to put on a show in the UK. I had my route mapped out in my head, it was a bit risky, but thankfully it paid off. The talent on the track was beyond measure and I\u2019m stoked that Red Bull and Mad Mike put on such an epic show. It was a blast!\u201d<\/div>\n

Thousands of fans assembled from 9am, as Liverpool geared up to host the toughest precision driving competition that has ever taken place on UK soil.<\/div>\n

Mad Mike, the brainchild of Red Bull Drift Shifters who placed 9th<\/sup>\u00a0today said following the event, \u201cIt was absolutely unreal, I\u2019m ecstatic! It was overwhelming to see how many people came out and to see the actual event unfold so perfectly. People are like \u2018ah, you got knocked out early\u2019 but for me the success of the event is far, far better than me standing on top of the podium\u201d.<\/div>\n

The adrenaline-fuelled event challenged\u00a0drivers to test their nerve and manoeuvre their way\u00a0around the features; scoring points for\u00a0speed, line, angle and proximity\u00a0<\/b><\/u>of their cars to the obstacles. Crowds witnessed the drivers\u00a0combining their own unique choice of speed, line, angle and proximity into each run, watching cars pinball through the track triggering sensors to generate the best scores.<\/div>\n

The\u00a0state-of-the-art\u00a0technology system<\/u>\u00a0rewarded\u00a0drivers as they drove in their own style, using\u00a0sensors<\/u>\u00a0which instantly converted the quality of each drifting\u00a0performance into a\u00a0point\u00a0<\/u>score, removing the need for judges and or any\u00a0perceived\u00a0<\/b><\/u>human bias over the final results.<\/b><\/div>\n

The event was organised in partnership with Liverpool City Council and forms part of Liverpool 2018 \u2013 a year of projects marking a decade since Liverpool\u2019s transformational year as European Capital\u00a0of Culture.<\/div>\n

    Red Bull Drift Shifters was originally\u00a0dreamt up by New Zealand professional drifter \u2018Mad\u2019 Mike Whiddett, debuting in his home town of Auckland back in 2012.<\/div>\n
